Wow did the European Nightcrawlers shrink in size after being in the bag for 4 months. I'll be trying to monitor the system a bit more as I get ready to harvest this summer before adding compost to my yard and gardens this fall. The coffee grounds really produce fine castings which is great for sorting! African Nightcrawlers - Survived the Winter! 04/23/2024

Really amazed that the African Nightcrawlers made it through the winter with just some food. I added very little moisture and the worms seem nice and long when I thought it would be an easy harvest. So we are adding some fresh bedding, food, and moisture to see if we can get them to move over so I can harvest the material! Yes, I was impressed by your video. Yes, you could have added biochar, cardboard, or even other amendments. But this was not what your video was about. It was about what you did and what the result was. Action and result, pure and simple, and nothing more to complicate the issue. Thank you. Also, the clear vision, audio, and editing took us from start to finish with no waiting for the next week. ie, a complete film. And besides all that guff, I learned a bit. Tar.

    I use a 15 sheet shredder & process around 6kg/13½lbs of boxes in a session - more than that & the thermal cutout kicks in. I reckon on using 200-250kg/440-550lbs a year in my annual output of around 2.5m³/3.3yd³. I'm no dig/no till & this is just sufficient for my needs.

    I wonder if the pine pellets would work as well. They're $7/40lb bag from Tractor Supply...and expand precisely the same as the hardwood. I already use them for cat litter (they're freaking amazing for that)...so I always have some on hand.

    How different are the videos about bokashi in Spanish. If you are looking for information in Spanish about bokashi, it is always using manure, molasses, yeasts, etc. and using a shovel outdoors. While in English they are the same using buckets? , they have already purchased the bokashi and only introduce kitchen waste. So it's not really like making bokashi.

      The Vermibag with the mesh top really dries out quickly which is why I have the tarp on top to hold the moisture in. If I lived in a more humid climate it would probably be a good thing.

    Have you ever had a problem with the grinder jamming up so it won't even turn? I have the FC-50 and several times it has jammed to the point you have to loosen the screw in the bottom to free it up.

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting Місяць тому

      I have had this happen but I've never used a screw to loosen it up. Typically I would add water to loosen up the mass that plugged it then add some try woody material typically peanut shells. After this I would restart the unit and it would clear the jam all by itself. I have found that this happens when the material is too wet and/or too much stringy.

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting Місяць тому

      I'm not sure that would work but I'm not an expert on bokashi I have just been trying all the methods to get rid of food waste without throwing it out and this was another option especially for bones and meats. Typically if I need more bokashi bran I use a rice wash and make it from scratch.

    People are losing their mind over this appliance. Yes, it's not a composter. It's a FoodCycler. Vitamix is not claiming it's a composter. Its job is to process your food remains, grind them up and dehydrate them. It does so very well. It's better than the competition, because the filters are refillable, there's no subscriptions and it's not "smart". I have a lot of animals hanging around my property, so composting outside is a pain, because no matter where I bury my remains, they will dig them up. The FoodCycler solves that problem. In the winter, the composting worms break it down much more quickly. I also compost a lot of eggshells and it's a pain to grind them up by hand. The FoodCycler does that for me. For me, this is a great appliance.

      @WorldComposting 2 місяці тому

      It is just a regular shredder but you need one large enough to handle cardboard. If I was just composting it would be fine but for worm composting you really need it in smaller pieces so it has more surface area.

      I'm not sure which is better, the back and forth seems to be better at moving things down the screen where as the vibration can cause things to move in a circle at times. I think starting cheap and moving up works unless this is for a professional business.

      There is some risk but the watermelon has a lot of moisture in it and the UWB is pretty good at keeping moisture in. The worms can dive down if it gets too hot. This will get sorted out more as I harvest a bit so the top isn't so compacted.

    I have a Vitamix FoodCycler 5 and have been using it for a couple of months now. I'm quite happy with the result of the "compost". However I have issues with the bucket sticking in the unit after cycles are complete where I cannot get teh bucket out of the unit. I'm afraid the bucket handle wi break. Have you experienced the same issue? If so,how did you resolve it?

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting 2 місяці тому

      Yes I have had that issue. I have found it typically happens with stringy foods such as celery, artichokes, or asparagus. When this happens typically I will turn the unit to do a cycle have it start then open it and see if I can remove the bucket. To mitigate this if I have a lot of stringy food I'll put in half in one cycle then do another cycle after to cut back on how much it binds up. Or I add in a lot of shells such as peanut, egg, or avocado. I have found these tend to help create more fluffy output in general. Peanut shells work really well and I keep a container of shells ready to go although I know not many people eat them.

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting 2 місяці тому

      So far no real changes for the worms best I can tell but that is to be expected as I'm really only adding charcoal that should be biochar at the end once I harvest and it has had a chance to absorb water and microbes from the castings.

    Hi Lowel, as always, a great video! Two questions: Is your paper wet or do you keep it dry? Also, can the paper be watered with the bacteria solution? Thank you!

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting 2 місяці тому

      Great questions! First question, when the paper is stored I keep it dry as wet paper in a basement can grow mold. But I soak it for 30 minutes before adding it to the systems. Second question, yes and in fact the water I use to soak the paper when adding it to my system has been in the solution with the dunks.

    • @WorldComposting
      @WorldComposting 2 місяці тому

      I can't post the full manual but if you see my other videos this is an add food push button type system. I have put in lobster shells, corn cobs, peach, plum, and avocado pits without issue. It does have some difficulty with very stringy foods if added in bulk such as asparagus, celery, artichokes, or edamame. But I learned to just add them in slowly. Another item I add that was previously being thrown away was meat, chicken bones and fish skin. These items can cause issues in a compost system but now are ground up and added to my yard. Hope that helps if you have other questions ask away!

    Where do you purchase the round hole screen?

      I purchased the screen off eBay but that seller isn't listed anymore.

    Have you tried with left over pizza? Or left over pasta? I just got my eco 5 today, it’s running now, I do use lemons a lot and mandarins, so we will see how that goes with the peels.

      Yes I have put leftover pizza in it. We never have leftover pasta. I've put in tons of orange peels without any issues. Only issues have been with lots of asparagus or artichokes can block it up so add those in shifts if you have a lot.
